Certification Requirements

Certified Dental Assistant

To become a certified dental assistant, students must have earned a high school diploma, or its equivalent and complete a state-approved dental assistant program. Programs that incorporate a hybrid combination of online and classroom training typically take between 2-3 years to complete. Followed by the completion of a dental program, and a state-approved certified dental assistant test, a candidate is ready to work in the field.

Dental Hygienist Certification

To work as a dental hygienist, students must have earned a high school diploma, or its equivalent and are required to complete a state-approved dental hygienist program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Following completion of the appropriate program, students must pass the state-approved certified exam. Requirements vary by state. It is recommended that students follow up with their respective state to determine the necessary licensing requirements to practice within their state.

Certified Orthodontic Assistant

In the dental assisting profession, it's important to stand out. The more education you receive the more consideration an employer may give you. The right training and a passing grade on the certified orthodontic assisting exam, will allow you to put your best foot forward in your dental career. Candidates are required to have earned a high school diploma or its equivalent before consideration to an accredited program may be given.

Dental Lab Technician Certification

To work as a dental lab technician, students must have a high school diploma or its equivalent. Upon completion of an accredited dental laboratory technology program, individuals can become certified by passing an exam administered by the National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology. A Certified Dental Technician can specialize in one or more of the following areas: complete dentures, removable partial dentures, crown and bridge, ceramics or orthodontics.
