State of Massachusetts, Dental Assisting Certification Requirements

Dental Assistant Trained on the Job (OJT)

You must be at least 18 years old, of good moral character, and not licensed as a dentist or dental hygienist.
Complete a course on the CDC guidelines for infection control.
Have a current and valid CPR license for healthcare professionals.
Apply to register with the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Dentistry.
You must work under the supervision of a licensed dentist, dental hygienist, or dental assistant.
You may have a preliminary 6 months of training prior to registering with the board. However, the licensed dental professional training you must submit a complete and accurate signed and notarized notice of intent, attest to the fact that you have never been licensed as a dental professional, and show proof of their license to practice. Along with the date the 6-month, unlicensed training will begin.

Formally Trained Dental Assistant (FTDA)

You must be at least 18 years old and be of good moral character.
You have successfully completed an accredited dental assisting program.
You have a current and valid CPR for the Professional Rescuer or a Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification.
And you must apply to the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Dentistry for your registration.

Certified Assistant (CA)

You must be at least 18 years old and of good moral character.
You have a current national certification from DANB (CDA, COA, CPFDA, or CRFDA), or a certification from another board-approved body.
Have a current CPR or BLS certification.
Apply to the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Dentistry for your registration.

Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA)

You must be at least 18 years old and of good moral character.
You have a current national certification from DANB (CDA, COA, CPFDA, or CRFDA), or a certification from another board-approved body.
You've completed your formal training.
You hold a current and valid CPR or BLS certification.
Apply to the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Dentistry for your registration.
