State of New Jersey, Dental Assisting Certification Requirements

Unregistered Dental Assistant

As an unregistered dental assistant in the state of New Jersey, you are permitted to perform basic dental procedures under the supervision of a licensed dentist.

There are no other education or training requirements.

Registered Dental Assistant

You must have your high school diploma or equivalent.
You must pass the DANB's national Certified Dental Assistant or Certified Orthodontic Assistant exam within 10 years prior to your application.
Graduate from a New Jersey board-approved accredited dental assisting program.
Or, have at least 2 years of full time work experience as a dental assistant, complete a board-approved program in expanded functions, and pass the New Jersey Duties-General exam.
Or, have at least 2 years of work experience as a dental assistant within 5 years of your application, and pass the New Jersey Duties-General exam
