State of Ohio, Dental Assisting Certification Requirements

Basic Qualified Personnel

You must be at least 18 years old.
You must be trained directly under a licensed dentist within a planned sequence of instruction whether in a classroom or through in-office training.
You must have completed basic life support and remains current at all times, especially if you're monitoring nitrous oxide-oxygen.
You must complete and pass a 6 hour course in nitrous oxide-oxygen monitoring from an Ohio State Dental Board approved permanent sponsor.
Or, you graduated on or after January 1, 2010 from a CODA-accredited dental assisting program.
Or, your current credential is from another state, and your training was equal to or greater than the training requirements in Ohio.
You need to have at least two years of practice, and a minimum of 3,000 hours of experience.
You need proof of immunity from the Hepatitis B virus, unless you've been granted a waiver.

Certified Assistant

There are 2 recognized dental assisting certifications in the state of Ohio: the DANB Certified Dental Assistant Certification (CDA), or the Certified Ohio Dental Assistant certification. Having either one makes you a certified assistant.

To perform pit and fissure sealants, and coronal polishing, additional requirements need to be met.

Coronal polishing

Complete a coronal polishing training program that's Ohio Board approved.
Pass the test immediately following the completion of your skills assessment.
Apply to the State Board to become certified to perform coronal polishing.

Plant and Fissure Sealants

Complete a course with 2 hours of didactic instruction and 6 hours of clinical instruction.
Apply at least 6 sealants before your supervising licensed dentist.

Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary (EFDA)

To be considered EFDA qualified, you must:

Be an unlicensed dentist who graduated from an accredited dental college. You don't have a dental license that is suspended or revoked.
Be a dental student enrolled in an accredited dental school, and you're in good standing as a student.
Or, graduate from an unaccredited dental college outside the U.S.
Or, be a Certified Assistant.
Or, be a dental hygienist in good standing.
Or, be a dental hygienist who graduated from an accredited dental hygiene program, with a license that is neither suspended or revoked.
Complete a board-approved, accredited training course.
Pass the EDFA exam given by the Commission on Dental Testing in Ohio (CDOT), or CODA.
Have your basic life support certificate through the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
Apply to the Ohio State Dental Board for your EFDA registration.

Conditions for Performing Functions When the Dentist is Not Present

If a licensed dentist is not present for 15 consecutive business days, there are certain functions you may perform if you're a Certified Assistant or an EFDA.

You have at least 2 years/3,000 hours of experience.
You've completed your board approved courses in identification and prevention of potential medical emergencies.
Your supervising dentist has evaluated your skills and deemed you competent to treat patients with supervision.
The patient was seen by the supervising dentist no longer than one year prior to being seen by you.
There are established written protocols or orders for you to follow while the dentist is out of the office.
The medical and dental evaluations were done on the patient not longer than one year prior to the date the patient is being seen by you.
The patient must be notified that the dentist will be absent.
You are under contract with the supervising doctor.
You are providing a service as part of a program through a school district, board of health, dental association, or any other public or private entity.
