State of Oregon, Dental Assisting Certification Requirements
Dental Assistant
You are permitted to perform basic dental procedures until the complete supervision of a licensed dentist.
There are no other education or training requirements.
Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA)
Pathway 1
You must have an Oregon issued certificate of Radiologic Proficiency. You must complete a CODA approved dental assisting program. And, you must apply for the Oregon EFDA certificate. Pathway II
You must have an Oregon issued certificate of Radiologic Proficiency. You must complete a CODA approved Certified dental assisting program. You must pass the Oregon Expanded Functions General Dental Assisting Exam. You must provide endorsement from an Oregon licensed dentist stating that you have completed all the clinical requirements. Apply for the Oregon EFDA certificate. Pathway III
You must have an Oregon issued certificate of Radiologic Proficiency. You must complete a CODA approved basic dental assisting program. You must pass the Oregon Expanded Functions General Dental Assisting Exam. You must provide endorsement from an Oregon licensed dentist stating that you have completed all the clinical requirements. Apply for the Oregon EFDA certificate. Pathway IV
If you're certified from another state, then it must be from one with equal or greater requirements to Oregon's. Or, you must get verification of competence from a licensed dentist that you've been employed for at least 1,000 in the past 2 years as a dental assistant performing expanded functions. Apply for the Oregon EFDA certificate. Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) with Restorative Functions Certificate
You must complete an OBD-approved restorative functions program from an accredited program. Or, another type of approved course. You must pass the Western Regional Examining Board (WREB) Restorative Exam (or equivalent) within 5 years after applying. Apply for the Oregon Restorative Functions certificate. Or, if you pass the WREB or its equivalent five years or longer prior to your application, you must submit verification from another state or jurisdiction where you're legally allowed to perform restorative procedures. Apply for the Oregon Restorative Functions certificate. Expanded Function Orthodontic Dental Assistant (EFODA)
You must complete one pathway from the following in order to become certified:
Pathway I
You must complete an approved dental assisting program. You must apply for the Oregon EFODA. Pathway II
You must complete and pass the Certified Dental Assistant exam OR Certified Orthodontic Assistant (COA) exam. You must pass the Oregon Expanded Functions-Orthodontic Assisting exam. You must provide endorsement from an Oregon licensed dentist validating that you've finished all the clinical requirements. Apply for the EFODA certificate. Pathway III
You must pass the Oregon Basic dental assisting exam. You must pass the Oregon Expanded Functions-Orthodontic Assisting exam. A Oregon licensed dentist must provide endorsement validating that you've finished your clinical requirements. Apply for the EFODA certificate. Pathway IV
If you're certified in another state, it's requirements must be similar or better than Oregon's to be eligible for certification. Or, you must obtain verification from a licensed dentist that you have at least 1,000 hours in the past two years where you've performed expanded orthodontic functions. Apply for the EFODA certificate. Anesthesia Monitor
You must receive training monitoring patients who are under sedation, and you must be capable of assisting with the procedures, problems, and emergencies that may happen due to the sedation or other unexpected medical complications. You must have a current and valid Basic Life Saving certification or equivalent. You must train in monitoring vitals. You must know how to use the equipment used to monitor sedated patients. Anesthesia Dental Assistant
You must have a current and valid Basic Life Saving certification, or equivalent. You've completed and passed the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Anesthesia Assistants Program from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, or the course by the California Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Or, you completed and passed the DANB Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Assistant exam prior to its discontinuation in 20002. Apply for the Oregon Anesthesia Dental Assistant certificate. Anesthesia Dental Assistant with IV Therapy Certificate
You must complete and pass an IV access or phlebotomy course. Apply for the Oregon Anesthesia Dental Assistant certificate. Expanded Function Preventive Dental Assistant (EFPDA)
Pathway I
You must have an Oregon Certificate of Radiologic Proficiency. You must complete and pass an accredited preventive functions course. Apply for the Oregon EFPDA certificate. Pathway II
You must have an Oregon Certificate of Radiologic Proficiency. You must complete and pass the national DANB Certified Preventive Functions Dental Assistant exam. You must complete and pass the Oregon Expanded Functions-General Dental Assisting exam. You must have validation from an Oregon licensed dentist that you've completed your clinical requirements. Apply for the Oregon EFPDA certificate. Pathway III
You must have an Oregon Certificate of Radiologic Proficiency. You must pass the Oregon Basic Dental Assisting exam. You must pass the Oregon Expanded Functions-General Dental Assisting exam. You must have validation from an Oregon licensed dentist that you've completed your clinical requirements. Apply for the Oregon EFPDA certificate. Pathway IV
If you're certified from another state, it must have similar or greater requirements than Oregon. Or, you must have verification from the licensed dentist you were employed with that you have at least 1,000 hours in the past 2 years working as a dental assistant performing expanded preventive functions. You must apply for the EFPDA.
