State of Tennessee, Dental Assisting Certification Requirements

Practical Dental Assistant

You will work under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist.
You will receive practical chairside dental assisting training from a licensed dentist.
Or, you are a dental student in an accredited program.

Registered Dental Assistant (RDA)

You must be at least 18 years old.
You must have your high school diploma or GED.
You must have your Basic Life Support certificate.
You must pass the Tennessee Board of Dentistry Ethics and Jurisprudence exam.
You must apply for registration to the Tennessee Board of Dentistry.

Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) Qualified to Perform Expanded Functions

To perform coronal polishing

You need to complete and pass a Tennessee Board-approved coronal polishing course and pass the clinical and written exam.
Or, complete a dental assisting program that included coronal polishing in the coursework.
Get your certificate through the Tennessee Board of Dentistry.

Apply Sealants

You need to complete and pass a Tennessee Board-approved course in sealant application and pass the clinical and written exam.
Or, complete a dental assisting program that included sealant application in the coursework.
Get your certificate through the Tennessee Board of Dentistry.

Monitor Nitrous Oxide

You need to complete and pass a Tennessee Board-approved nitrous oxide monitoring course and pass the clinical and written exam.
Or, complete a dental assisting program that included nitrous oxide monitoring in the coursework.
Get your certificate through the Tennessee Board of Dentistry.

Perform expanded restorative and/or prosthetic functions

Have a minimum of two years full time work as a registered dental assistant in the 3 years prior to enrolling in the course.
Complete and pass a board approved course.
Get your certificate through the Tennessee Board of Dentistry.
