State of Texas, Dental Assisting Certification Requirements

Dental Assistant

You are permitted to perform basic dental procedures until the direct supervision of a licensed dentist.
There are no education or training requirements.

Registered Dental Assistant (RDA)

You must complete and pass a course in basic life support.
You must complete mandatory training that includes procedures for positioning and exposing dental x-rays, jurisprudence, and infection control.
Or, you must earn the national DANB CDA certification plus complete the Texas Jurisprudence Assessment.

Dental Assistant Qualified to Perform Expanded Functions

You will be able to perform the following functions under the direct or indirect supervision of a licensed dentist.

Monitor the administration of nitrous oxide

Pass a board-approved nitrous oxide monitoring course.
Register with the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners

Perform pit and fissure sealant procedures

Work a minimum of 2 years as a dental assistant.
Have a current basic life support certificate.
Complete at least 8 hours of board-approved didactic and clinical education in pit and fissure sealants.

Perform coronal polishing procedures

Have at least 2 years of working as a dental assistant.
Complete at least 8 hours of board-approved clinical and didactic education in coronal polishing. It could be through dental school, dental hygiene school, or a dental assisting program. They must be accredited through CODA.
Earn the national DANB coronal polish (CP) certification.
Or, graduate from an accredited dental assisting program.
