Traditional Dental Assistant
In the state of New Hampshire, you are permitted to perform basic dental procedures under the supervision of a licensed dentist.
There are no education or training requirements.
DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA)
You are qualified to perform most dental assisting functions. However, for some functions you must have 400 hours of clinical dental assisting prior to performing the function.
Graduate Dental Assistant
You are qualified to perform dental assisting functions. Once you've graduated from an accredited dental assisting program, you have Graduate Dental Assistant status.
Dental Assistant Qualified To Perform Expanded Functions
You must be at least 18 years old.
You must meet the prerequisite courses, certifications, and experience requirements for each of the following:
Introduction to Dental Assisting
Either be a Graduate Dental Assistant, or hold a DANBs CDA certification. Or, have at least 200 hours of clinical dental assisting experience prior to the course, and successfully complete a course and exam in the Introduction to Dental Assisting. Infection Control in the Dental Office
Either be a Graduate Dental Assistant, or hold a DANBs CDA certification. Complete a course or exam in infection control. Provisional Crown and Bridge Restoration
Either be a Graduate Dental Assistant, or hold a DANBs CDA certification. Complete a course or exam in infection control. Meet Intro to Dental Assisting course requirements. Qualify in infection control. Complete the course or exam in provisional crown and bridge restoration. Orthodontic Duties
Either be a Graduate Dental Assistant, or hold a DANBs CDA certification. And complete a course or exam in orthodontic duties. OR
Be CDA certified or have at least 400 hours of clinical dental assisting experience. Meet the Intro to Dental Assisting course requirements. Either be a Graduate Dental Assistant, or hold a DANBs CDA certification. Complete a course or exam in infection control. Dental Sealants
Be a Graduate Dental Assistant or have your CDA certification. Complete a course or exam in dental sealants. OR
Have at least 400 hours of clinical dental assisting. Meeting the Intro to Dental Assisting course requirements. Qualify in infection control. Compete the course or exam in dental sealants. Coronal Polishing
Be a Graduate Dental Assistant or have your CDA certification. Have at least 400 hours of clinical dental assisting. Compete the course or exam in coronal polishing. OR
Have at least 400 hours of clinical dental assisting experience. Meet the Intro to Dental Assisting requirements. Qualify in infection control. Complete the course of exam in coronal polishing. Monitoring Nitrous Oxide Administration
Be a Graduate Dental Assistant or have your CDA certification. Compete the course or exam in nitrous oxide. Have your current and valid CPR certification. OR
Have at least 400 hours of clinical dental assisting experience or have your CDA certification. Meet the Intro to Dental Assisting requirements. Qualify in infection control. Compete the course or exam in nitrous oxide. In-Office Tooth Whitening
Be a Graduate Dental Assistant or have your CDA certification. Compete the course or exam in in-office tooth whitening. OR
Have at least 400 hours of clinical dental assisting experience or have your CDA certification. Meet the Intro to Dental Assisting requirements. Qualify in infection control. Compete the course or exam in in-office tooth whitening. Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary (EFDA)
If you are going to be qualified to place, contour, and adjust direct restorative materials within an oral cavity, then you're going to need to register as an Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary.
You must be at least 18 years old. Be a registered dental hygienist, or a graduate dental assistant, or hold a current CDA certification. Have at least 4,500 hours of clinical experience. Get a recommendation for the expanded function dental auxiliary course from a New Hampshire licensed dentist. Complete the EFDA course in dental restorations. Have a current and valid BLS certification. Apply to the New Hampshire Board of Dental Excellence for your EFDA permit.
