State of Maryland, Dental Assisting Certification Requirements
Dental Assistant
You may provide basic dental procedures under the supervision of a licensed dentist.
There are no educational or training requirements.
However, if you're working under the general supervision for a sealant program, you must:
Have a current and valid Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers or CPR for Professional Rescuers certifications. Have at least 400 hours of clinical practice in patient care. Complete a board-approved course with a minimum of 2 hours in infection control with OSHA protocol, or be qualified in general duties or orthodontic duties, or hold a current DANB Certified Dental Assistant or Certified Orthodontic Assistant certification. Have a written agreement/contract with the supervising dentist setting forth the terms and conditions of practice under general supervision. Dental Assistant Qualified in General Duties
Complete a 35 hour minimum board-approved course related to Maryland's general duties dental assisting. Pass the MGDA Expanded Functions exam or pass the national CDA exam, and apply to state recognition as a Maryland Dental Assistant Qualified in General Duties. You may also want to earn Dental Radiation Technologist status. Dental Assistant Qualified in Orthodontics
Complete a 35 hour minimum, board-approved orthodontic dental assisting program. Pass the Orthodontic Assisting Expanded Functions exam, or the national DANB Certified Orthodontic Assistant exam. Apply for state recognition as a Maryland Dental Assistant Qualified in Orthodontics.
