State of California, Dental Assisting Certification Requirements
Unlicensed Dental Assistant:
You can provide supervised supportive dental procedures as long as it's under a licensed dentist.
Your employer is responsible to make sure you maintain your Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
If you've been employed for 120 continuous days, you must provide proof of the following within 1 year of employment:
a California board-approved course in the California Dental Practice Act An approved course in infection control An AHA or American Red Cross approved Basic Life Support course with hands-on simulation. Registered Dental Assistant:
You must graduate from a state-approved dental assistant program.
Or complete 15 months of hands-on training from a licensed dentist.
Complete a board-approved course in radiation policy and coronal polishing.
Complete a board-approved course on the California Dental Practice Act and infection control 5 years prior to applying for your license.
Successfully complete a Basic Life Saving course through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
Pass the state exam.
Apply for your license through the Dental Board of California.
Registered Dental Assistant in Extended Functions:
You must hold a valid Registered Dental Assistant certification.
Complete and pass a California board approved course for the application of pit and fissure sealants.
Successfully complete a board approved extended functions program.
Pass the written and clinical exam.
Registered Dental Assistant in Extended Functions with additional training:
Complete training in placing protective restorations and determining which radiographs to perform.
Plus, all the requirements for a registered dental assistant in extended functions.
Orthodontic Assistant Permit Holder:
You must already be a registered dental assistant in extended functions.
Or, a registered dental assistant.
Or, you must have completed 12 months of work experience as a dental assistant, plus completed the board-approved courses in the California Dental Practice Act and a basic live saving course through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.
Complete a board-approved orthodontic assistant course.
Pass the written exam.
Dental Sedation Assistant Permit Holder:
You must be a registered dental assistant or a registered dental assistant in extended functions.
Or, you must have completed 12 months of work experience as a dental assistant, plus completed the board-approved courses in the California Dental Practice Act and a basic live saving course through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.
Successfully completed a dental sedation assistant course.
Pass the written exam.
